Attendance of Members

A lovely turnout!

Here is the schedule for Baking/selling

Bakers - Melissa T.
Sellers - Melissa T and Brielle M.

Bakers - Siddharth, Christina T., Melissa T.
Sellers - Kat, Katz, and Christina T.

Sophia, if you could bake for Wednesday, that would be absolutely wonderful.

If anyone besides Brielle and Melissa would like to sell on Tuesday or Wednesday, that would be wonderful! Derrick and Abby maybe for one day?

Derrick and I had a little out of club chat, and we have materials and stuff for DoS. WE WILL NEED PEOPLE TO WALK AROUND WITH CLIPBOARDS AND GET MASSES OF PEOPLE TO SIGN UP! BECAUSE WE WANT 4908590345890049589034598345789040 PEOPLE NOT TO TALK SO EASTERN WILL BE SILENT.

I'd say, if anyone has quotes they want to put on the T-Shirts, bring them to the next meeting.
For more information, check out http://www.dayofsilence.org.

We had a very lovely educational chat on Same-sex marriage in other countries. Hopefully it gets approved in South Africa.

Unfortunately, the senate in Idaho approved a ban on same-sex marriage. :-(.

Okay, next week is THE BAKE SALE ON TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, and THURSDAY. Baked goods can be dropped off at Friedman's room, so PLEASE BAKE LIKE MAD.

Next meeting is THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23rd! BE THERE OR BE STRAIGHT SQUARE! Lol just playing, people.

Now off to write my history paper...

Very late post about the 15th [18 Dec 2005|10:47am]

[ mood | crazy ]

Well everyone, the meeting on the 15th ROCKED!

Adri left early for bowling, but she was there in spirit =D.

Sophia G.
Meggin S.
Bekki L.
Katie L.
Adam R.
Alex C.
Mallory K.
Brielle M.
Siddhurth B.
David B.

At the meeting, we discussed the differences between gay marriage and civil union. It tied in religious aspects of the views on gay marriage and the Bible's beliefs about homosexuality.

Mallory started the "talking glasses," which I thought were very sexy successful. =D.

Okay, so the next meeting is WEDNESDAY the 21st aka the first day of winter! ANYONE CAN BRING FOOD! Post if you are what you're bringing. Derrick and Friedman will be leading a discussion on the pope's decisions about homosexuality and gay marriage.

YAY! Okay leave me comments.

On Posting [03 Nov 2005|05:32pm]

Hey wonderful guys and gals of the EHS GSA!

I think I can shed some light on this sudden, and perhaps confusing, situation regarding posting. It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that it hurts others' feelings when they are spoken of with negativity. The twisted realities and stretched truths of Kat Corson's more recent posts have been painting the officers in a terrible color, with the result (this shouldn't be a surprise) that posting rights have been temporarily revoked, save those of Adri and me (the ones who can explain what is going on).

While I have this soapbox, I suppose I'll take advantage to explain (at arguable length) my position on the matter.

I hold these truths to be self-evident:
 * The GSA is an organization focused on Peace, Unity, and Understanding of others.
 * It is counter-productive (to our goal of reaching peaceful understanding) to speak badly of another unless you have addressed your grievance(s) personally to no avail.
 * The GSA room is a place of refuge and harmony - negativity invading the group is unwelcome.

If anyone should disagree with any of these statements, let him or her post a comment suggesting an amendment.

 Ahem. Thank you.
::gets off soapbox::

In closing, I'd like to remind everyone that our next meeting will be on Wednesday, Nov. 9 (the last day before break). We will be finalizing our poll and discussing "openly out" celebrities.

CHANGE OF MEETING DATE TO 11/10! [26 Oct 2005|04:45pm]

[ mood | annoyed ]

Well, Adri and Derrick didn't tell me, but they decided to change meetings back to the 2nd and 4th of the month...so the meeting is the 10th, not the 3rd. Sorry if I told you the 3rd - no one told me.

Btw, today we had pictures. We didn't know about it, so if someone says to you something about pictures, no one informed us.

Yup, that's it for today.

10/20 Meeting [20 Oct 2005|04:37pm]

[ mood | blah ]

Today we had quite a turnout of people, but ahem, OH EM GEE WHERE WERE THE OFFICERS?!?!

Officers in Attendance
Secretary - Kat
Yeah...everyone else disappeared...

Today when I ran the meeting, I tried to organize these following people, and you could probably say I failed miserably:

  • Brielle

  • Rachel

  • Jenna

  • Jess

  • Sophia

  • Kelsey

  • Jen

  • Justine

  • Samantha

  • Justin Timberlake

  • Ron Weasly - wow for making fun of my love for Harry Potter, you can't spell his name...that's pathetic.

  • Erica

  • Alexis

  • Nicole

  • Lorenzo

  • David

Yeah...no last names bwcause I don't want to get sued...

We broke into groups and came up with questions for the survey. This is what we got for brainstorming:

  • What is your sexual orientation?

  • Are you against gay marriages? Civil unions?

  • Do you know anyone who is gay?

  • Would you dislike someone depending on his/her sexual orientation?

  • Are you comfortable around homosexuality?

  • Are you against homosexuality because of parental or religious beliefs or influences?

  • Do you support adoption by gay couples?

  • Do you think people should be able to discriminate against homosexuals when it comes to jobs, organizations, and/or medical treatment?

  • What are your overall beliefs on homosexuality?

Simple rough draft ideas - I personally feel we need to make it mostly multiple choice, because it's 7:30 in the morning, and most people aren't capable of functioning that early - at least I know I'm not, lol.

Z said she had ideas...any of you people who showed up today get some sort of revelation after the meeting???

My personal opinion condensed into a slightly un-rantish form.

It really wasn't fair to leave me there alone. I know Derrick apologized, and that's cool, but if you're an OFFICER, you have a commitment to the club...As far as Ashley goes, I think she's uninterested and I elect Z to her position...

WHERE WAS FRIEDMAN? With our kind of club, it's a really bad idea to have NO ADULT in the room...it was really hard for me to keep people under control, especially because I know some people were there just to mock the club...I want to thank Brielle and Sophie because they were helping me out...but EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE THERE!!!

The next meeting is November 3rd, a Thursday. For you n00bs, we meet the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month.

A dictionary of terms:

  • GSA - Gay/Straight Alliance; a group that promotes tolerance and understanding of people of all sexual orientations

  • Sexual orientation - The direction of one's sexual interest toward members of the same, opposite, or both sexes.

  • LGBT - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender

  • HRC - Human Rights Campaign

  • Day of Silence - a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT students and their allies; APRIL 26th THIS YEAR!!!

Adri...if you could type up the sheet of attendance from last meeting and post and send me the e-mails, we can start an email newsletter for those in the club against their parent's/s' will/s. And we have to update the LJ page, because Tara and Liz aren't officers anymore ='(.

Comments, questions? OH EM GEE LEAVE COMMENTS kthxbai.

Let's fuck with the homophobes! [13 Oct 2005|10:02pm]

from emmagrant01, from jedirita

Dear friends,

My local [San Antonio] Clear Channel-controlled media outlet is doing one of those stupid online polls on the proposed state constitutional amendment that would define marriage as only "one man and one woman."

If you want to participate in a largely meaningless but fun act of sabotage, please go to http://www.woai.com and vote NO in their instapoll "Do you support the gay marriage ban?"

Avast ye! Prepare to be boarded! Arrrr!!!

--Jedi Pirate Rita

PS If you are a registered voter in Texas, please vote AGAINST Proposition 2 on November 8. Voting in an online poll means nothing. Voting in an election counts.

A message from Jewels [12 Oct 2005|06:28pm]

[ mood | content ]

Wow I'm a freakin' post-a-holic.

Jewels thought it important for us to know:

I don't know if you've seen http://www.godhatesfags.com but I think you should take a look at that and see if theres any groups trying to get them shut down. Although the people running this site think they can say these things because of freedom of speech laws, theres more to that law than most people know. And its included in that law that freedom of speech ends when you start infringing on the rights of certain groups and start causing harm (as in this case, where they even picket at funerals). If this site were 'god hates black people' then I'm sure there would be more controversy, so its up to us to stir some up.

BTW I'm sorry this is irrelevant to this post but I wasnt sure if I could make my own and I really wanted this GSA to see this :(

Topic of discussion next week?

P.S. Okay, okay, okay, this is my last post for today.

Local AIDS walk info. [12 Oct 2005|05:47pm]

[ mood | bored ]

Sorry for the incessant posting but here's my research on AIDS walks:

The New York AIDS walk was held May 15th this year. Hopefully, they have it around the same time, so we could go to that one.
The New Jersey AIDS walk date for 2006 will be announced in January 2006...that's in New Brunswick, and it doesn't say anywhere when it was last year. EDIT: I saw on a couple sites that it was on June 12th last year.
We missed the AIDS Walk Delaware.
I went to the page for the AIDS Walk Baltimore, but no information is posted.
We missed the Washington D.C. AIDS Walk.

Does anyone have any interest in attending the AIDS Walk in NYC, or possibly New Jersey or Baltimore? We need to get a lot of people to go on this, and it would be awesome if you guys wanted to come!

Okay I'm done typing. Bye!

10/12 meeting [12 Oct 2005|05:34pm]

[ mood | calm ]

Here's your oh-so-cheerful secretary reporting what happened at today's meeting.

Officers in Attendance:
Prez - Adri
Vice Prez - Derrick
Treasurer - Abby
Secretary - Me!

Yeah okay I don't think our propaganda person wants to be in it. Maybe we should elect Z? Sorry, just an opinion.

So today, we had about a dozen new people showed up. The officers stood in the front and talked to the new people about some activities we do and why we exist. Topics and points of interest brought up:

* Introduction of officers

* Trip to see Rent

* "Gay? Fine by me" t-shirts

* Homeroom survey

* Decreasing the use of "That's so gay"

* Meeting with other GSAs

* Making the club have more of an impact

* Day of Silence - what it is and goals for participation for this year

Mr. Friedman talked about why he runs the club and what having a GSA means.

Yeah, we aren't going on the AIDS Walk in Philly on Sunday because it couldn't get approved by the board ='(. Hopefully we can find one for NYC, Baltimore, or D.C. I'll look that up and post if I find anything.

Next meeting is NEXT THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20th!!!

Abby and I agreed that the meeting was a little too much of us talking to people and not enough interaction. We probably should have something next meeting where people participate...maybe make survey questions, work on organizing bake sales, researching information on gay issues, etc. Any ideas, any? Anyone who just came to the meeting, if you guys have ideas, FEEL FREE AND POST THEM BECAUSE WE WANT YOUR INPUT!!!

Thanks to everyone for coming to the meeting today, and please come back so we can make GSA a big success!!!! People, please feel free to bring food...yeah, sorry I didn't bring muffins >.<, I'll have them for next Thursday.

another one of those things to pass on, via rans_curse [07 Oct 2005|03:47pm]

just a little something from an old, old alumnus. :)

1) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, liposuction and air conditioning.

2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

3) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Brittany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans...
Re-post this if you believe in legalizing gay marriage

Another kinda boring meeting on 10/3/05 [03 Oct 2005|08:04pm]

[ mood | crazy ]

Officers in Attendance:
Prez - Adri
Vice Prez - Derrick
Treasurer - Abby
Secretary - Kat aka ME

Well, today we waited around for Chad to show up and he couldn't get the cameras out of the closet thing so we didn't get to film. I hung up the awesome poster on Friedman's door, and Friedman is now working towards getting us to go on the AIDS Walk so that the board approves it after it happens and we get a bus (Mr. Mo's suggestion). While waiting, I walked around the senior high and hung up posters in probably legal places.
After we found out Chad couldn't film, Derrick and I went to the IHS and hung up flyers, but Derrick had to leave so I finished up.

First meeting is WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12th. Derrick needs to work on a voiceover for the second half of the commercial, and we need to film it this Thursday or Friday. People, comment if Thursday or Friday is better, and I'll email Friedman and let him know.

C'mon people let's get this thing rolling! =D.

9/30 officer meeting [01 Oct 2005|11:41pm]

[ mood | bouncy ]

Hey guys!

Here are some like, official meeting notes:

Officers in Attendance:
Prez - Adri
V. Prez - Derrick
Treasurer - Abby
Secretary - Me!
TBD - Nadia
So Ashley was the only one not there.

In Friedman's room, we discussed the purpose of GSA. We discussed problems from last year and how to reform the club. Some ideas we had:

Bake sale for Katrina
Pin drive - order pins and distribute them for anti-gaybashing (EDIT: thanks Laura).
Anonymous survey - hand out a survey where people mark their sexuality (LGBT) and how they feel about homosexuality and post the results.

The meeting date changed from Thursday, October 6th to Wednesday, October 12th, because of all the Jewish holidays people wouldn't see the commercial. So yeah.

We filmed the commercial in the Studio thanks to Derrick and Chad. Adri danced and looked hella sexy, btw. Chad's gonna flash different colors and have one screen with the info for the meeting. Monday he will create the speeded up hallway thing.

Sorry my notes are a little simplistic...lemme know if I should add anything.

Anyway, I told Liz about the pin idea - she told me about "gay? fine by me.". You can order t-shirts, really cheaply priced, and distribute them for free or the same price. Then, we could have a day where everyone wears them. I think the idea is TERRIFIC!

I'll make more flyers and the poster tomorrow...haha I accidentally posted this in my journal instead of here. -.-;;.

Okay, I'm done. Yay for a successful meeting!

[ mood | business ]

So, what a great GSA meeting, yeah yeah?

Here are some importaint dates to remember:

Mon the 3rd: Stay after; finish the video.
Thu the 6th: Airing the commercial! :D
Wed the 12th: First open meeting; bring your friends.

Fri the 14th: AIDS Walk forms are due; do contribute.
Sun the 16th: AIDS Walk.

Let's make the next meeting even MORE successful - I will be expecting energy sparks flying around that room boys and girls - so make this shizzit happen, mkaaay?

PS: I think the officers should have another meeting before the 12th - I'm not really satisfied with the plan we have concerning Wed the 12th - or maybe i just know of the wrong plan. Butt anyhow - enlighten me!

PSS: You guys wanna make me a position now? :D Hahaha. Make it something funny!

PSSS: Great job by the way, I'm really proud of all of you and your ideas and especially of our president for SHAKIN' IT!

Advertisement Ideas [17 Sep 2005|04:00pm]

[ mood | bouncy ]

Yay! My first official officer post.

Okay, just to introduce myself, I'm Kat. I'm a freshman. Liz is my older sister, but hey, I'm not "little Corson" considering the fact I'm four inches taller than she. Anyway, I'm really psyched for GSA.

First off, I was Co-Prez of the VMS Chorus last year, and we advertised using my eye-catching blue flyers. I made a flyer with the meeting time, info, blah, blah, blah, and my Co-Prez and I went around the school posting them at high-traffic locations, such as bathrooms, water fountains, main intersections, etc.

This brought us from about 25-30 members up to 70. If you want, I'll make a flyer and run them off on bright-colored paper. Then, we could stay after school and post 4568490689024895602390485 of them all over the school. We could also have 2 big posters - one by the SHS cafeteria and one in the IHS lobby. We could do this after school sometime next week, so that we have these up AND the commercial, maximizing our image and making people think about it. If you guys want posters, i'll make them cuz I'm kinda artsy.

I think we REALLY need to stress that GSA has the "S" in it somehow, and also, put on flyers what we DO. People asked me this year and last year, "What's GSA? What do they DO?" I mean, cuz everyone knows what the Asian-American Club does, but not GSA.

Whaddya guys think? G2g anyway...bye.

I am the guy who came out to the entire school in his senior speech and got a standing ovation for his courage.

I am the girl who kisses her girlfriend on the sidewalk and laughs at those who glare.

We are the couple who planned and studied and got a damn good lawyer and BEAT the state that wanted to take our child away.

We are the ones who took martial arts classes and carry pepper spray and are just too dangerous to gaybash.

I am the transgendered person who uses the bathroom that suits me, and demands that any complaining staff explain their complaint to my face in front of the entire restaurant -- and shares with my other trans friends which restaurants /don't/ raise a stink.

I am the mother who told her lesbian daughter to invite her girlfriend over for dinner.

I am the preacher who told my congregation that love, not hate, is the definition of a true follower of God.

I am making a difference. Hate will NOT win.

i would leave [05 Aug 2005|09:45am]

Saw this on my friends list, thought you might be interested.

True Story. A religion teacher assigned her class an essay on what makes a good Christian. One student wrote about praying nightly, say no to abortion, banning gay marriage, and donating money. The other student wrote about talking to God and allowing people to enjoy their lives, and supporting gay marriage. The day the teacher was to hand the papers back, she called up the second student and told him she would pray for him when he went to hell. The student asked why would he be going to hell, and why he got an F on his paper. The teacher told him that Catholicism is against gay marriage. The student looked at her for a minute, then said aloud, "I'm gay." The teacher kicked him out of class as if he had said fuck or worshiped Satan. A girl in the back of class who had a boyfriend and was obviously straight got up and left too.

If you would leave the classroom, repost this. It doesn't matter if you're straight, bi, or gay. It doesn't matter if you're catholic or not. Everyone is a human being and deserves happiness.

Isn't Christianity supposed to be about, oh, love thy neighbor, do unto others as you would have done unto yourself, etc? Eh, but what do I know, right?
